NEPALI SCHOOLHOUSE
Pro Bono design + build
in partnership with KRMEF

The Kevin Rohan Memorial Eco Foundation (KRMEF) is a registered 501c3 nonprofit that fosters health and well-being in Nepal’s most impoverished communities by encouraging sustainable change through environmentally friendly programs. For several years we served in an advisory role on their Board and for 6 months we volunteered our time in Nepal to carry out a vision for the design and construction of a 3 story school house in a rural village 45 minutes outside of the Kathmandu valley.

Our pro-bono services included facilitating the design process for the foundation, production of required construction documents, and the construction of the new foundation and concrete structural frame. In our absence during the remainder of the construction process - the community took hold of the project. A non-bearing, earthen-plaster wall facilitated a canvas for creativity in which community members, volunteers, and staff worked to memorialize their service by laying incremental layers of mud while drawing patterns with recycled glass bottles. The result is a building that reflects an empowered, creative community; a place they take pride in and continue to build upon to this day.
